For young children, oversized or overly prominent ears can be a source of teasing, bullying, and taunting. For adults, ears that draw attention to themselves can distract the gaze from the other features, such as the eyes and the smile. Our otoplasty in Denver corrects the ear size, shape, and projection, restoring aesthetic harmony as well as a more positive self-image.

Otoplasty Recovery

Most patients enjoy a swift and streamlined recovery process after otoplasty with minimal swelling, bruising, or discomfort. Any tenderness or pain can be relieved with prescription or over-the-counter medications. Dressings are usually removed after 7 days, and a special headband is then worn for several weeks to help the ears maintain their new position.

Most patients can resume normal activities within the first week, taking care to avoid strenuous exercise and sports for 3-5 weeks while the ears heal. For children, it is recommended that they undergo the surgery during summer or winter break, allowing them enough time to properly heal without interruption.

In general, good candidates for otoplasty are physically and mentally healthy non-smokers who have a realistic and positive outlook toward their surgery. It is important that otoplasty is performed only on children whose ears have finished growing and who are capable of following instructions for recovery. Typically, children around 5 or 6 years old can successfully undergo ear surgery, provided they have a positive attitude and understand what is involved with the surgery. Dr. Locketz will conduct an in-depth consultation process to determine whether otoplasty is the ideal procedure for each patient.

Otoplasty Procedure

The goal of otoplasty is to create ears that are proportionate to the rest of the features, and that appear balanced and symmetrical. Incisions are typically created in the backs of the ears, where they are inconspicuous. The ear cartilage is then adjusted and reshaped, pinning the ears closer to the scalp. Internal sutures are used to help the ears maintain their newly sculpted contours. Surgery typically takes around two hours to complete. Younger patients will receive general anesthesia, while teen and adult patients can often undergo the surgery with local anesthesia and sedation.
