What Is Breast Implant Removal/Exchange?

After undergoing breast augmentation to improve the size and shape of the breasts, some women may decide to have their implants removed or exchanged for a variety of reasons. These may include certain complications such as rippling, rupture, capsular contracture, or a simple change in cosmetic taste. At Peak Plastic Surgery Center in Denver, CO, Dr. Barker will meet with you to discuss a customized treatment plan to ensure your goals are met.

If the goal is to remove the implants without replacing them, a breast lift and/or fat grafting can be performed to ensure the breasts remain aesthetically pleasing. Alternatively, a breast implant exchange may be ideal for patients who would like to achieve different results or whose current implants have been damaged in some way. Dr. Barker has years of experience performing breast explant surgery and can restore your figure as well as your self-confidence.

When Should Breast Implants Be Replaced?

The majority of saline and silicone breast implants are FDA-approved to last approximately 10 years. This doesn’t mean that you will have to get your implants replaced, however. Many patients can retain their breast implants past this time frame. In general, most patients will only need one or two breast implant replacements during their lifetime.

How Is Breast Implant Removal/Exchange Performed?

For breast implant exchange surgery, you will be given general anesthesia at an accredited surgical center with highly trained anesthesiologists. Dr. Barker will decide beforehand with you during your initial consultation which incision pattern and implant type will be used to replace your original implants. There are numerous ways to perform a breast implant exchange, so it is imperative that you choose a highly trained plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgery, like Dr. Barker.

In the case of breast implant removal, you will also undergo general anesthesia. Numerous surgical options are available for this procedure to ensure your breasts are restored to an aesthetically pleasing position and shape. After removal of the original implants, you may require a breast lift, fat transfer, or both. Dr. Barker will discuss all of your concerns and goals at your consultation to ensure you have the best outcome and achieve your desired results.

Recovery is different for each patient, and Dr. Barker will provide in-depth, individualized aftercare instructions to ensure your healing is seamless and stress-free. Most patients can expect to resume jobs that do not require strenuous physical activity within a week. A full return to exercise can often take up to 4-6 weeks.

Immediately following surgery, you will need an adult to drive you home and assist you for the first 24 hours or so.
